About the Founder

As a former recipient of outreach programs, Tyrie Nason Buchanan has firsthand experience on their effectiveness and has dedicated his life to making these programs available for families in need. A native of the South Side of Chicago and a former resident of Gary, Indiana, Buchanan is no stranger to growing up in the inner city. Born into a neighborhood infected with violence, gangs, and drugs, he had his hopes set on uprooting himself out of the strains of poverty. Thus, he efficaciously focused on his athletic skills in order to receive a football scholarship for Kentucky State University upon graduating high school. There, he became an active member of campus Community Outreach programs including Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., which later opened the doors for him to become the President of the Campus Pan-Hellenic Council, as well as various other community programs. After graduating from KYSU with a B.A. in Business and contentedly pursuing a career with the government, Buchanan received a phone call that would unexpectedly alter the course of his life. An unforeseen tragedy befell him as he learned the horrifying news of the fatal crimes that led to the losses of his mother and his two brothers. These tragic deaths led to the birthing of his nonprofit organization, DMTL, which bears the initials of the founder, Tyrie Nason Buchanan, his deceased two brothers, Marcel and Larry, and his beloved departed mother, Delores. DMTL is committed to improving the quality of life for the residents in Los Angeles and the surrounding metropolitan areas, with a special emphasis on the needs of inner-city youth and their families.
